BibleNumbersChapter 32

Numbers 32

But Moses said to them, "If you will do this, if you will go before the Lord for the war, and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the Lord, until he has driven out his enemies from before him and the land is subdued before the Lord, then after that you shall return and be free of obligation to the Lord and to Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the Lord."

Numbers 32:20-22

Summary

In Numbers chapter 32, the tribes of Reuben and Gad approach Moses with a request to settle in the land of Jazer and Gilead, on the eastern side of the Jordan River, instead of continuing to the Promised Land. They make their case by highlighting the suitability of the land for their livestock. Moses initially reacts with concern, fearing that their decision could discourage the other Israelites from crossing into Canaan. He reminds them of the sin of their ancestors, who faltered in faith, and warns them about the consequences of abandoning their brothers in battle. After negotiation, the Reubenites and Gadites assure Moses that they will support their fellow Israelites in the conquest of Canaan before returning to their chosen land. The chapter concludes with the two tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh receiving their inheritance on the eastern side of the Jordan, showcasing both their faithfulness in fulfilling their commitments and the grace of God in providing for His people even in their distinct choices.
