Jeremiah 41:11

Summary

Jeremiah 41 recounts the violent and treacherous events following the Babylonian conquest of Judah. Ishmael, son of Nethaniah and of royal lineage, conspires against Gedaliah, the governor appointed by Babylon. Ishmael's betrayal results in the murder of Gedaliah and several Judeans and Chaldeans. The aftermath sees Ishmael taking captives and attempting to escape to the Ammonites. However, Johanan, son of Kareah, intervenes and rescues the captives, although Ishmael evades capture. This chapter highlights themes of betrayal, the fragile nature of human authority, and the deep wounds inflicted by division among God's people as they strive for survival in turbulent times.
