BibleJeremiahChapter 13

Jeremiah 13

This is the word of the LORD to me: “Take the loincloth that you have bought, which is around your waist, and arise, go to the Euphrates and hide it there in a cleft of the rock.”

Jeremiah 13:3-4

Summary

In Jeremiah chapter 13, God instructs Jeremiah to perform a symbolic act involving a linen loincloth to convey a message to the people of Judah. Jeremiah is told to wear the loincloth without washing it until it becomes spoiled, representing the corruption of Judah who have refused to adhere to God’s laws. The chapter emphasizes that as the loincloth was meant to cling to the body, so too were the people of Israel and Judah meant to cling to God, highlighting their intended intimate relationship with Him. Instead, their pride and idolatry have led them away. Jeremiah warns of the consequences of continued disobedience, portraying the impending judgment and exile as a result of their failure to listen to God. The chapter concludes with a lament for the nation's pride and the blindness that prevents them from turning back to God.
