Genesis 38

And he said, ‘She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.’ And he did not know her again.

Genesis 38:26

Summary

Genesis chapter 38 presents a stark narrative that interrupts the overarching story of Joseph. It focuses on Judah, one of Jacob's sons, and highlights his actions following a significant personal tragedy. After leaving his family, Judah marries a Canaanite woman and has three sons. When his firstborn, Er, dies due to wickedness, Judah instructs his second son, Onan, to fulfill the duty of levirate marriage. Onan, however, disobeys God's command and dies as a result. Judah then tells his daughter-in-law Tamar to return to her father's house until his youngest son, Shelah, is old enough to marry her, but he fears for Shelah’s life as well. Tamar, believing she has been wronged, disguises herself as a prostitute, deceives Judah, and becomes pregnant by him. Upon discovering Tamar’s pregnancy, Judah initially orders her to be burned for her perceived immorality, only to later recognize his own culpability when she reveals that he is the father. The chapter concludes with the birth of twins, Perez and Zerah, through Tamar, emphasizing God's ability to bring forth purpose and lineage from flawed circumstances.
